2012 Programme

Friday 04/05

"Duos and Duels"
Shielbridge Hall, Acharacle
Concert 7 pm followed by Festival Meal 8.30 pm

The perfect apéritif to our Festival dinner! We kick off with a few of Bartók’s crunchy,
folksy Duos for two violins, played by Helena Rose and Charles Mutter, then one of
Offenbach’s delightful Suites for two cellos - it wasn’t all about can-cans chez Offenbach.

Finally, Beethoven’s witty (and fiendish) Duo for viola and cello “mit zwei obbligaten
Augengläsern” - glasses certainly needed for the performers, but you the audience
can simply sit back and enjoy a top-up!

The meal following the concert is a festive buffet provided by Jill Gosney of
Ardshealach Lodge (www.ardshealach-lodge.co.uk).

Helena Rose (violin), Charles Mutter (violin)
Duncan Strachan (cello), Catherine Rimer (cello)
Alistair Scahill (viola)
Tickets:
Concert £ 7 - accompanied children free
Festival Buffet Meal £ 13 - BOOKING ESSENTIAL

Saturday 05/05

"Heaven and  ... elsewhere"
Glenfinnan Church, 7.30 pm

Charles’ new chamber ensemble Florin, born out of the unforgettable Bruckner
7th Symphony performed in the 2008 Festival, brings a programme of extraordinary
emotional range. With guest artists Susan Frank (flute) and Duncan Strachan (cello),
the concert starts with bubbly Schubert (aged 18), then Schnittke’s coruscating String
Trio from the last years of Soviet oppression, a charming Swiss flute quartet (where
else but Loch Shiel?) and Arensky’s deeply moving Quartet for violin, viola and two
cellos, a beautiful homage to his idol Tchaikovsky.
The Florin Ensemble:  Charles Mutter (violin),  Alistair Scahill (viola) and Catherine Rimer (cello)
with Duncan Strachan (cello) and Susan Frank (flute)
Tickets: £ 10 - accompanied children free

Sunday 06/05

"Mozart and Mozart"
The Ariundle Centre - Strontian, 1 pm

Susan Frank is one of our Festival’s favourite artists - appearing here with her own trio in 2006 and 2009, and switching to the recorder for the “Dance of the Dove” in Noye’s Fludde in 2010. She joins Florin for one of Mozart’s effervescent Flute Quartets, followed by one of that composer’s greatest masterpieces, the Divertimento in E flat for string trio.

Running time for this concert will be around 70 mins, so lunch will be a little late but
definitely worth the wait!

The Florin Ensemble:  Charles Mutter (violin),  Alistair Scahill (viola) and Catherine Rimer (cello)
with Susan Frank (flute)
Tickets: £ 7, excl. meal - accompanied children free
